There is so much to keep track of during Catholic Schools Week that I thought I would give you the break down for our grade.
Monday Wear: pajamas (keep in mind that they will be rollerskating and need socks) Collect: baby items for Crisis Pregnancy Center Skating: Students can skate before school 7:30-7:55. Something special: Assembly with the mayor at 11:15am Read with our church buddies. Tuesday Wear: crazy socks/hair/hat Collect: canned veggies for the food pantry (monetary donations are welcomed as well) Skating: We will skate by ourselves today. Wednesday Wear: red polo shirt Collect: baby items for Crisis Pregnancy Center due today Skating: Students can skate before school 7:30-7:55. Thursday Wear: sport team apparel Collect: spaghetti/sauce PBJ/ for the food pantry Skating: We will skate with our church buddies in the morning. Something special: Book Fair during our library time (1:30-2:10) Family/friends lunch Student/staff music performance Friday Wear: movie/TV character Collect:soup for the food pantry Skating: Students can skate before school 7:30-7:55. Something special: Family Skate night -we skate at 5:30 and eat pizza at 6:30 -Book Fair is open Everyday students will be able to purchase gourmet suckers from student council. Social Studies: Pioneers are our big focus as we finish up the Midwest in the textbook this week. The test for Chapter 8 will likely be on 1/30. Math: The topics we cover in math this week are: two digit division, congruent figures and multiplying by multiples of ten. There will be a test Wednesday. Reading: See How they Run is our story in the reading anthology. Spelling: The spelling test will be on Thursday again this week. You can find the list at https://www.spellingcity.com/users/blewis333 The list can be found under Unit 4 Week 1: Our Government Science: The class has enjoyed me reading aloud The Wild Robot and you can see below our Friday afternoon was full of problem solving fun. I brought in some recyclables from home, gave the class a few parameters and watched them work together to create a structure for the characters like the one described in the book. When there was discussion about a particular point, they were encouraged to look in the book and find evidence to support their idea. It was wonderful to see the teamwork and idea sharing. Did You Know: This class is full of amazing helpers. Each student has a job that helps the classroom run smoothly. Ask you child what their new job is. On the calendar: 1/26 - Reading Counts Winter Party (congrts to Liberty, TJ, Cadin, Logan, Avery, & Madison!) 1/29 - 2/2 Catholic Schools Week 2/9 - Field trip to Sangamon Auditorium and Pizza Ranch 2/16 - No School, Inservice 2/19 - No School, President's Day Social Studies: Wednesday will be full of fun review for a test we will take on Friday.
Math: The topics we cover in math this week are wide ranging: comparing fractions, word problems, and multiplying three digit numbers. Reading: I'm looking forward to being back in the textbook after a fun break with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We'll have an unusual schedule for a few weeks due to the many four day weeks coming up. Reading long for this week will be due next Tuesday Spelling: As a result of the "not Monday" start in our reading book, our spelling lessons are off schedule as well. Students will get a leveled list Wednesday and take a test on that list Tuesday 1/9. Science: We don't have science on W or TH. Friday that time slot will be filled with a bit of extra Social Studies: learning about Canada. The class has enjoyed me reading aloud The Wild Robot, and next week we'll be doing some STEM activities that go along with the book. On the calendar: 1/15 MLK Day - No School 1/19 Spirit Wear Day 1/29 - 2/2 Catholic Schools Week Photos below will show how busy we have been in the last couple of weeks. We have been coding, painting and understanding how to do long division. Our study of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ended on Friday with a critical viewing of the 1971 movie. I enjoyed breaking out the mini chocolate bars just as the characters were entering the Chocolate Room. For the next couple days we'll be off schedule quite a bit. Math will be various games and activities that cover a variety of skills. Language Arts will include main idea and Holiday Task cards that cover skill such as capitalization, punctuation, & verbs. There will be a science test Tuesday morning. We will have a Christmas party in the afternoon. The party will include a book exchange. Each child should bring a wrapped book that is labeled To: YOU From: (your child's name). The book should be suitable for either a boy or a girl.
Social Studies: We'll continue with the geography chapter about the Northeast. There will be a test on Friday.
Math: The topics we cover in math this week are wide ranging: subtracting across zero, rounding numbers to estimate, multiplying two digit numbers and the associative property. Reading: Molly's Pilgrim is a small book about an immigrant girl that we will read this week. We'll cover character development in our reading and writing lessons. Spelling: Molly's Pilgrim is not in the text book, but I have found spelling lists for this book and created a couple different lists. Students will still take a pretest on Monday and be tested on Friday with a list that will be a good fit. Science: The class has a good grasp of simple machines, and our next topic is heat and light. On the calendar: -Monday 11/13 Pizza will be provided in celebration of birthday one of our students. -The Christmas Bazaar is only a few weeks away. 4th grade will fill a Baking Goods Basket. Please go to this Google Form and sign up for an item to include in the basket. Thank you in advance for your help. Please have items turned in by Wed. Nov. 29th. Social Studies: This week we'll finish up our quick look at Illinois and begin the history of the Northeast. Math: Monday will be a benchmark test (much like the one we took at the beginning of the year).We'll have another test on Tuesday. Then the rest of the week will be investigating decimals. Reading: Our genre this week is entitles The Buffalo Are Back. It's in Unit 2 Week 3. English: As I have stated before, we are learning how to identify prepositions in sentences. There are a lot of them, and Monday will be a review day for the CheckUp on Tuesday. Spelling: There are many four day weeks in this grading period. There fore, we will have a spelling test on Thursday. Be looking in your child's homework folder on Monday for the list they will test on Friday. I will assign Spelling City for them to use as practice this week. Please let me know if for some reason you are unable to access the assigned games. Science: Our next unit of study is about energy. This week we will look at simple machines and heat. On The Calendar: No School Friday: Veteran's Day Social Studies: Thursday will be a test over the history and people of the Southeast.
Math: We'll have another test on Wednesday. Reading: Our genre this week is non-fiction. We're skipping around in this unit a bit because I thought it would be fun to read about spiders on the last week of October. English: Our class is starting to get the hang of the Shurley Grammar series. I hope they are coming home and singing the jingles to you. This week we'll be learning about prepositions. There are a lot of them, and we'll even step out of the book on Thursday to play a Preposition Bingo to help familiarize ourselves with the prepositions. Spelling: We now have a Spelling City premium membership. This means that I can assign games and activities to students based on the exact spelling list that fits them. I am so happy to be able to make this accommodation for everyone. Be looking in your child's homework folder on Monday for the list they will test on Friday. Science: The Chapter 1 Science test is finally upon us. We will review and prepare all week for the test on Friday. Reminders: Please sign your Blue Friday Folders each week so that I know you have seen them. It's also a place to write an encouraging note to your student or tell me something that I might need to know. Continued drilling of multiplication facts at home is needed. We are transitioning to more and more lessons about multiplication. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle to my class. However, it must be a bottle and not a cup. Cups with straws can spill.
