Red Ribbon Week: What a fun time we've had between learning fables, working on math facts, and responding in our journals to all the fun.
I would love to see the faces of my students. If possible, we can meet daily via Google Meet. I'll include a link in the Google Classroom Stream a few minutes before 10am. Once we start on 3/31/20, I'm sure you will have lots of questions, and meeting live will be the best way to answer and help you.
During these "Act of God" days, you should be reading from the Epic! account I set up for us. You can find that class code in our Google Classroom. I've set up a section of books about National Parks. You can continue to work on your park packet using these resources. I've included other ideas and fun things to do. Check it out if you haven't already. I hope you are keeping a bit of a schedule. I think of you all at 9:35am when my "recess" timer goes off and I jump on the treadmill for a few minutes. Mark Kelly, an astronaut who was on the International Space Station for over a year, suggested keeping a daily routine as a way to help with this solitude. He also recommended doing a craft or hobby for relaxation and keeping the mind active. Stay home as much as possible. Hope this finds you well. -B. Lewis Reading: We are finishing up our study of The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies next week. This story has gone hand in hand with the economics unit we are doing in Social Studies. It's nice to talk about needs and wants during Christmastime. ;)
Math: Please continue to work on multiplication facts with your child. We are now doing division with a remainder; a skill that is easier accomplished when there is good math fluency. Social Studies: We are launching a biography study of inventors. Students will use a variety of resources to take notes and write a report about an inventor. Science: There are a lot of vocabulary words to review for our next test, which will be Friday. Reading: We will have another week of stories in our anthology. Then we'll spent the next three weeks reading a novel together.
Spelling: We'll have our spelling test for this week on Friday. The silent letters were tricky for most student during the pretest. We'll continue to work on the at home and school throughout the week. Math: The lesson about mixed numbers was lesson 38, and the answer could be found there to help with question #7. Social Studies: Reading: We will focus on theme and parts of a drama in our reading selections. Our vocabulary will focus on antonyms.
Spelling: We'll have our spelling test for the list that went home last will is this Thursday, Oct 18. Math: Test on Thursday means that there will be a practice test going home Wednesday night. Other things going on this week include the introduction of square roots and review of multiplication and regrouping in subtraction. Social Studies: There will also be a test on the Southeast region on Thursday. Study guides will go home Tuesday night. Science: Our next chapter of study will be on forms of energy. We have a lot of fun exploring simple machines and doing experiments in this chapter. Reading: Students really enjoyed the twisted tale in the anthology last week. Since this is a short week, we are looking closely at more fairy tales. We'll be writing our opinions and looking at different points of view.
Spelling: Since it is a short week, we'll have our spelling test next Thursday, Oct 18. We took a pretest, and lists have gone home. Math: Topics include fractions and multiplication. Please continue to review multiplication facts with your student. Social Studies: Last week we started learning about the history of the Southeast region. We continue that this week, and also put up a class timeline that we will interact with for the rest of the year. Science: I originally scheduled our science test for tomorrow. However, I had not taken Columbus Day into account. We reviewed again today. The test will be this Friday, Oct. 12th. The study guide is set up just like the test. Students will be expected to write complete sentences in the last section. Feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions. Field Trip: I'm so excited to share the Wildlife Prairie Park with this class. We are going in one vehicle. This allows me to read a few chapters from The Wild Robot to them. We'll also take a bit of time to review for that afore mentioned science test ;) Please send them with water bottles to walk around with (it's a big place) as well as a good jacket (sack lunch too of course). Students are allowed to wear casual clothes, preferably spirit wear. Reading: We've been focusing on the reread strategy of our expository texts. During Talk Like A Pirate Day, students played a game that had them using context clues to determine what different pirate words meant. We had a good time, matey!
Spelling: Unit 1 Wk 3 games can be found on Spelling City. Math: Elapsed time and rounding are the focus for the week. Test on Thursday. Social Studies: This is a transition week between our study of the Southwest and the Northeast. Map skills have been the focus. For Talk Like a Pirate Day, we plotted cities on our own island and located them using latitude and longitude lines. Science: With early dismissals this week, we are slowly plugging along in Chapter One. This we we've talked about what we can learn from looking at fossils and rock layers. |
